.......................................................

Ms. Bonum:

Their mother, monster, keeper, & guilt-ridden pedantic.

She has a skin condition giving half of her body, including her face, a red pigment.

Adeo: She’s the blood daughter of Ms. Bonum, & though she & her sisters are unaware of this, they still see the resemblance & the skin condition similar to Boe on half her body, except her face. She’s the eldest & gets off easier with punishment.

Half her skin has a red pigmentation. Sometimes Ms. Bonum makes her cover it.

Me: She has autism & is the glue that keeps the sisters together since the other two, Adeto & Dilia, are not exactly fans of each other. She worries about how they treat each other when she's not with them, given how they are when she is. She tries the hardest of the three to follow the rules but gets in trouble most often.

Diligis: She’s the youngest & deaf. She’s the feisty one of the three & gets into trouble with Boe on purpose but by accident too. Her behavior insights some group punishments & Adeto is usually the one to confront her about it. She tries hard to avoid trouble for May, but she loathes Boe & can't help but misbehave.

Adeo, Me, & Diligis are kept captive in the home of Ms. Bonum, whos obsessed with “perfection” & repetitive habits.

The girls must wear & do most of the same things, uniform, gloves, bows, exercise, & food. They can’t talk in front of their mother because they have different voices & one isn't allowed to speak at all, but they can write & sign. If one has to cover her scars, they all must follow, even if they don’t have one. If one gets hurt, then all get hurt in the same way. Their devices are somewhat modern versions of outdated devices. Upgraded radios, flip phones, cameras, CDs, etc. They can text freely & Diligis can use text-to-speech. Bonum says she does it all for their safety.

Duppies

The duppies are workers on their estate & all are older or young women. The maids wear all-white dresses, masks, stockings, & gloves that cover their whole bodies. These workers serve & make food, do cleaning, spy, & “teach lessons.” The girls call them “the duppies,” sinister spirits or ghosts. They often frame the girls for messes to get them a spanking; Bonum commonly punishes the duppies instead &/or takes the bait.

The gym teacher Ms. Nasi wears a masquerade mask, but unlike the duppies, we get to see parts of her skin, but usually only her legs/hands in stockings or gloves. She holds a staff & microphone to yell at & threaten the girls as they run, exercise, & play on the field while being driven in a motorized carriage or sitting on her throne. She wears red, white, black, & orange & is rude/authoritarian in her teaching; often teasing the girls & their bodies, but May & Adeto get the majority of her body shaming. The girls call her “That Gym duppy.”

The gals are alone with the duppies or Dr. Sanctum for most of the day. She teaches them cleanliness, cooking, & etiquette, & reinforces their tedious routine. She has a purely sexual affair with Ms. Bonum, & is quite soft in her persona, being gentle & kind to the girls but also encouraging Nasi's behavior towards them. Her uniform is mostly light pink & brown, with green vines embroidered into her brown steampunk-themed plague doctor mask, lined with gold rim. Her dress was inspired by nursing uniforms in the 20th century.

The girls aren't taught much history but can read & write, & are taught crafts like sewing, gardening, taking care of animals, etc. The girls eventually learn of female puberty, anatomy, & sex from Boe & Dr. Sanctum, but they know nothing of men.

The sisters share a single room & it's a haven for them, away from demanding eyes. Dr. Sanctum & Nasi made sure they'd have a safe space for their mental health, but they can’t be too loud & Boe is often paranoid about what they get up to since they don't have to obsess over the rules & can play/freely speak to one another there.

It’s locked from the outside at night & they must be in position before being let out in the morning. Outside their room, they discretely whisper, pass notes, or sign to each other when they think no one is paying attention. They get breaks/free days when Bonum isn't home or when their duties are over & have tea time, hang with the animals in the garden, or record video with Dr. Sanctum, though the duppies often force chores on them too.

Usually, as long as their disobedience is not seen or heard, they won’t get punished, but living with so many rules is punishment enough, & having to basically be copies of each other is easier said than done. They mess up often, compounded by stress, fear, & competition; they are punished as a group when Adeo does something wrong, but Mia & Dilia are punished individually or together without Adeto. The girls never leave the estate or see the modern world & get private care whenever they get sick or hurt.

Despite the harsh nature of Ms. Nasi, she convinces Ms. Bonum to go softer on the girls, advocates for them, & helps dull Bonums obsession to a somewhat reasonable standard. Though Dr. Sanctum supports the girls having relative peace in their rooms & free time, she only does it to help them focus on their lessons & lessen the misbehavior she must deal with. Dr. Sanctum's all for so-called tough love, comforting & combing their hair after bruteness, but the girls would never think she hated them. Not even Dilia, I guess.

Me | Mia, Day, Yam

Me: She takes extra classes at night with Dr. Nomen, a psychologist picked out by Boe for her, & has more trouble following Boes rules & high standards because Boe doesn't seem to consider her & her autism into things despite the help. She acts like a therapist for the three sisters, hearing them out, & being a wholesome light in the darkness for them, but it weighs her down at times, only telling Dilia & Dr. Nomen her deeper problems or keeping it inside. She often gets taken to Sanctus, a "purifying room," where Mia suffers at Bonums hands, but the worst punishments are kept secret from Adeo. She's often used as leverage against both Adeo & Diligis, but Adeo doesn't fully know what goes on in Sanctus, so May tells her that all is okay, so she doesn't feel bad.

Some of Adeo's comments make Mia uncomfortable, thinking she's delusional about this place, but she is to some degree & they both use each other as an escape, in a way, avoiding their issues. Deep down, Mia believes that she is flawed & blames herself a lot. She knows about Adeto sometimes framing her to have a better image & Adeto knows she knows. Mia goes along despite feeling betrayed cause Mama Boe would've blamed her anyway/wouldn't believe her & she feels sacrifice is the only way she has value. At least she can play pretend with one person.

Diligis | Dili, Dilia, Gistate

Diligis: She's deaf & knows no spoken language but has a voice & can mouth words. She's pressured to use her device or sign language & never her voice; she usually follows but voices with Mia sometimes & is wary of Adeo. She may voice to rebel, annoy her siblings, or when she doesn't have a notepad/device or feels she won't be judged or embarrassed. She’s a bit insecure because one time, when Adeto was angry, she said Diligis sounded like a monster, a guttered beast, & mother frowns greatly on what she calls “defected-speaking.”

Both Dilia & Mia are often sent off to Sanctus, but mostly Mia; Diligis hates seeing Mia punished so often cause they're so lovely to each other, & Mia must try her hardest to fit into Mama Boe's standards. At times, Dilia takes the blame or creates a larger scene to get punished with/instead of Mia. When Dilia causes group punishments, including Adeo, on purpose, Adeo scolds her for dragging her into it, but Dilia ravishes in her pain, though she's done so by accident too.

Perhaps Adeo would do the same if not rightfully scared of Ms. Bonum, but Diligis still resents that Adeo rarely plainly has their back with the influence she seems to have over Bonum. Adeo has never gone to Sanctus, but Diligis & Mia have gone many times, so both bond over the experience & keep Adeo in the dark. Mia does it to protect her but Dilia does it so she feels left out & because Ms. Bonum has threatened them both not to. She sometimes taunts Adeo with the knowledge she has & hates that Adeo isn't punished as often because she isn’t like them. Though Adeo has her skin condition, she is still neurotypical & physically enabled, & for the most part, the rules are around mimicking her instead of their behaviors.

Adeo | Adet, Adeto

Adeo: She's the last blood daughter of Boe & doesn't know it; due to their similarities, Adeo feels disconnected from her sisters, like she's the cause of their anguish & has nightmares of ending up like Mama Boe, torturing them. Adeo has a romantic view of the situation because Mama Boe convinces her that it's all for good & sometimes she copes by telling herself that their pain is worth it but would never say it to their face. Mia & even Dilia don't know the extent to which Adeto justifies the abuse.

Though believing it's all for the best, she thinks all is good until caught & is discreet when defying Mama, stealing food, sneaking out with her sisters, making deals with duppies, & slightly breaking routine. When she's caught, all of them are blamed, as if they are in it together until Adeo isn't the one misbehaving, but her misbehavior doesn't cause group punishments all the time & she may be punished alone, though rare.

She helps prevent the girls from getting exposed/conforming to routine & tries her best to comfort her sisters when they're back from punishment with tea, cookies, storytime, songs, or pretending all is normal/saying it'll make them better. Mia will usually play along if she's up for it & though Dilia isn't as receptive to Adeo, she’ll play along too, but both are pretty down when back from Sanctum. Mama Boe usually waits for them to stabilize before joining them with Adeo.

Dilia hints at the amplified abuse she & Mia's face, but Adeto's too scared to look into or question it. Mia doesn't want Adeo to know & lies to her when asked about what happens in Sanctum. Adeto doesn't fully believe Mia's lies, but she chooses to because it's easier. Though Adeo feels guilty that her sisters are punished because of her, at times, putting May under the bus before being punished alone out of fear & because she’s an easy target, Adeto also assumes Mia wouldn't mind. After all, she hides her struggles.

Dilia constantly confronts & taunts Adeto about her privilege, making her question herself, & feel guilty. Adeo pretends to be the bigger person but chastizes Dilia’s reckless behavior in turn & bullies her for her voice, failures as a daughter, & deafness when she feels insecure & backed into a corner. She thinks fighting back against Boe makes things worse & tells Dilia she doesn't have as much power as she thinks, & struggles too.
